When new versions of Microsoft Outlook were released, they came with several new powerful features for compacting, autoarchiving and so on. However, the addition of new features has also meant that the data structure of the PST files that actually store all the important Outlook data also changed. This resulted in more frequent writes to the hard disk as more and more items were added to the PST file. Further, all PST files in the later versions of Outlook are in Unicode format. Some of these factors could cause performance problems. We will look at possible solutions to this. However, if the PST file continues to give trouble, you may want to conduct a PST recovery using advanced tools such as Advanced Outlook Repair from DataNumen.

One of the main problems that you may face while trying to access a PST file of the new Outlook version using an older version is that of a mismatch in formats. All older versions of Outlook were in the ANSI format while as we have mentioned before, the newer versions use the Unicode format. Obviously the newer PST files will not be read by the older versions of Outlook. To overcome this problem, you merely need to change the format of your new PST file to an ANSI format. If the PST file is damaged however, you may need to carry out a PST recovery using software like Advanced Outlook Repair ' we will come to that shortly.

To obtain a PST file in ANSI format, you can take the following steps:

·        Before you try using the newer PST file in an old Outlook version, convert it to ANSI format in the new Outlook version.

·        Through the main File menu and the Data File Management option, create a new 'Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folder File (PST)'. This file will quite obviously be in the ANSI format. You can now move all the information from your current PST file to the new PST file. Name it and save the file. Your PST file can now be used with older versions of Outlook as well.

You should however bear in mind that if any of your Outlook data that you have moved into the new PST file contain Unicode characters, they will not be properly displayed.

Sometimes, PST files get corrupted due to virus attacks or sudden power outages or hard disk failures. The best solution is to use the powerful Advanced Outlook Repair to carry out a speedy PST recovery so that all the important Outlook data can be restored the way it was originally, with no change in content or structure.
